New Head Chef
We are delighted to have on board our new Head Chef, Gianluca Gatto. An expert in woodfired pizza, Gianluca brings over twenty years chef experience working in restaurants throughout Italy. He and his wife Elisabetta are now resident in Nelson and are working towards becoming Kiwi citizens.
We have two new pizzas on our menu - The Drunken Pig - Slices of slow-cooked free-range pork scotch fillet with dry roasted orange kumera, red onion, pak choy and drizzeled with our Jack Daniel's glaze. You can also Build My Own pizza on our thin base with our tomato base sauce and your choice of any of our toppings, topped with NZ low-fat mozzarella cheese.

AWARDED "Certificate of Excellence"
June 2012: The Hot Rock has again been awarded a "Certificate of Excellence" by TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel review site. TripAdvisor awards this certificate to properties who consistently receive excellent ratings from their members. This follows the success of our first Award in 2011. We are delighted to have received such a prestigious award which recognises the efforts of our entire team thanks to you, our customers.
April 2011: The Hot Rock has received certification under the government's new Food Safety Programme. Our Food Control Plan has been approved by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA). In essence, it means we're totally committed to achieving the highest food safety compliance thereby providing our customers with the safest food possible.
FINALIST in the Global Pizza Challenge
March 2011: The Hot Rock was selected to compete in four categories for the New Zealand round of the Gloabl Pizza Challenge 2011 sponsored by Fonterra in Auckland on 2nd March. Head Chef Arron was a finalist in the Chicken category with French Chick, the Beef & Lamb category with Woolly Woolly, the Seafood category with Upstream and the Other Meats category with Island Bay. This is a fantastic result for Aaron and the team at The Hot Rock.
The Hot Rock was the only restaurant to be selected in the Top of the South region. Unfortunately the Challenge was not held in New Zealand in 2012.
WINNER - "Outstanding Wine List"
May 2009: The Hot Rock Gourmet Pizza Pasta Bar was awarded "Outstanding Wine List" at the 2009 Nelson Hospitality Awards sponsored by New Zealand King Salmon and Southern Hospitality. We make a point of showcasing the best of Nelson's wineries.

November 2009: By the way, Lonely Planet featured nearby Abel Tasman National Park on the checklist of essential experiences within their newly released "Best in Travel 2010" publication. On the should do list was kayaking around the "blissfully deserted beaches, coves and bays" of Abel Tasman National Park.
